Karen is a multi-hyphenated polymath in her early sixties. An Artist, broadcaster, author and menopause diversity campaigner. A former teacher and fashion designer, Karen is founder-host of ground-breaking podcast Menopause Whilst Black which champions Black British based menopausal stories now entering season seven. She is also the host of bi-weekly radio conversation show ‘Can We Talk’ on Gold Dust Radio, chatting about topics from menopause to creativity and beyond.

She was honoured to represent her community in the UK Parliament twice, advocating for diversity in menopause care. Karen is currently in the founding groups for several initiatives committed to pushing menopause equity in the UK onwards.

She has created three public art works - for award winning Sky Arts documentary 'Statues Redressed', award winning exhibition 'Taking Care of Business' at the Migration Museum and currently Playing the Race Cards 'Black Joy: Up Close and Personal' exhibition at Hastings Museum and Art Gallery.

After living in London for almost four decades, Karen relocated to the seaside where, alongside broadcasting she is further developing her arts practice.

Her first children’s book ‘Grandmas Locs’, celebrating Black hair in all its beauty, is out with Tate publishing on 5th September this year.


Karen will be speaking on the Structure of Intimacy Panel alongside Hiwote Getaneh, Maisie Hill and Natasha Miller at this year’s festival.
